PalmSource and Metrowerks Enhance Wireless, Multimedia and Enterprise Development on Palm OS

Newest Version of CodeWarrior Tool Kit Aids Palm OS Developer Community in Creating Higher Performance Applications for ARM-Based Palm Powered Devices

PALMSOURCE DEVELOPER SEMINAR, SAN MATEO, Calif. -- May 6, 2003 -- PalmSource, Inc., provider of the world's most popular operating system for handhelds and smartphones, and the Palm OS® subsidiary of Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), and Metrowerks today announced the newest version of CodeWarrior™ Development Studio for Palm OS®, Version 9.2. The popular development tools suite is designed to aid Palm OS software developers in creating higher performance wireless, multimedia and enterprise-grade applications for devices based on ARM® technology. CodeWarrior 9.2 is also designed to give comprehensive support to PalmSource's Fast ARM Solutions Toolkit (FAST) and to help provide compatibility with Palm OS 5 and future generations of the operating system.

"Developers are flocking to the business opportunities inherent in Palm OS 5, so the requirements for powerful and sophisticated applications for Palm Powered™ devices are also rising," said David Clifton, marketing vice president for Metrowerks. "Metrowerks is perfectly positioned to support the growing customer base of Palm OS 5 developers with the instruments they need to easily create, test and release dramatically improved compute-intensive enterprise, multimedia and wireless applications."

CodeWarrior Development Studio for Palm OS, Version 9.2, enables enhanced ARM development for Palm OS 5. Version 9.2 of the industry-standard tool set for Palm Powered handhelds adds advanced capabilities for application development. The Metrowerks tools have been updated and the linker now has the ability to output a debug symbols file that can be used with the Palm OS Debugger (POD) to allow debugging on devices using an enhanced debugger nub provided with the tool. Additional enhancements allow developers to choose either ARM technology or the Thumb® architecture extension as the main instruction set letting developers trade application performance for code size.

"Metrowerks has played an integral role in the growth of the Palm OS software developer community, setting the standard for developer tools since the first Palm Powered device launched in 1996," said Larry Berkin, director of developer marketing for PalmSource. "Today the release of CodeWarrior 9.2 gives the more than 260,000 registered Palm OS developers the essential tools needed to create innovative and powerful applications that take advantage of the increased power and usability of the ARM-based processors."

Version 9.2 also adds software development kit (SDK) support for Palm OS 5.2 using the newest Palm OS 5.0 SDK R2 engineered to provide support for Palm Solutions Group devices with five-way navigation support, the Palm Tungsten T simulator, and SDK support for the Handspring Treo 300. It is engineered to help support other Palm Powered OS 5 devices as nubs are added. The update also includes the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE) 5.2 with improved code completion and build performance.
