PalmSource Welcomes Developers with Awards, New Tools; Announces New Licensees

SnapperMail, Mobilefile, NoviiRemote and Wind Warrior Win 2003 Powered Up Awards

PALMSOURCE DEVELOPER SEMINAR, SAN MATEO, Calif. -- May 6, 2003 -- PalmSource, Inc., provider of the world's most popular operating system for handhelds and smartphones and the Palm OS® subsidiary of Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), gave a news-filled welcome to Palm OS developers at its U.S. seminar today. During his opening keynote talk, PalmSource President and CEO, David Nagel, honored four Palm OS developers with Powered Up Awards and introduced Fast ARM Solutions Toolkit (FAST), a toolkit that will help developers create ARM-based applications with greater ease and speed, while maintaining compatibility with future versions of the operating system. Additionally, PalmSource rolled out Palm OS Business Solutions, a special program for enterprise developers, announced a partnership with Research In Motion (RIM), and introduced two new licensees, Aceeca and Tapwave, extending the Palm OS platform into new markets.

Developers are an important part of the success of the platform. More than 17,000 applications created by Palm OS developers provide a vast reservoir of solutions that help make Palm Powered™ products integral to their customers' lives. Palm OS has far more developers and applications than any other mobile device platform, in part because the operating system's emphasis on openness and simplicity creates an ideal framework for developers of all skill and experience levels to build upon. The Palm OS Developer Program provides developers with access to the tools and information they need to produce software that broadens the capabilities of Palm Powered handhelds and smartphones.

The Powered Up Awards
Created by PalmSource to honor innovative and original applications, 2003 winners included:

Best Productivity and Best of the Best Solution: SnapperMail, by Snapperfish, Ltd., which puts the power of a desktop e-mail client onto any Palm Powered device. Best Student Developer Solution: Wind Warrior, by Andrew Stout, Aerowyn Software, a fast-paced martial arts adventure game on your Palm Powered device. It features superb animation and an impressive array of environments and backgrounds.

Fast ARM Solutions Toolkit (FAST)
The commercial success of ARM-based Palm OS 5 mobile devices has fueled demand and created new opportunities for higher performance enterprise, wireless and multimedia applications. FAST supplies developers with a straightforward path toward upgrading current applications and creating new ARM applications for Palm OS 5 that will also be compatible with future versions of the Palm OS operating system. FAST includes the Palm OS Debugger (POD), runtime libraries and integrated development tools. Metrowerks' Code Warrior 9.2 integrated development tool gives comprehensive support for FAST native application development and allows debugging using an enhanced debugger nub. FAST, combined with the extended memory of up to 128 megabytes of memory, Palm OS developers can expand the range and quality of the applications they create for compute-intensive environments such as 3D games, multimedia, scientific applications, digital signal processing, security and voice over IP.

Palm OS Business Solutions Program
According to Maritz Research, 2002, Palm OS is the mobile computing leader, appearing on 85 percent of enterprise mobile computing standards lists. These companies are hungry for ways to access business information through their handhelds and smartphones. The fast growing popularity of WiFi and other wireless delivery systems makes this need even more pressing. PalmSource today introduced the Palm OSテ「 Business Solutions Program, to enable Palm OS developers to strengthen their position in the enterprise market by aligning with the Palm OS platform, a trusted name in enterprise mobility. The program will allow developers specifically targeting enterprises to submit their applications to a series of tests that, once passed, will validate the application as "enterprise-ready." By connecting independent software vendors (ISVs) with Palm OS licensees, Systems Integrators (SIs) and other strategic partners, the Palm OS Business Solutions program streamlines developers' time-to-market and presents new channels for revenue opportunities and increased product awareness.

Newest Licensees
PalmSource also announced two new Palm OS licensees at today's Developer Seminar, continuing to implement its plan to expand the relevance and usage of mobile devices by targeting differentiated user and geographic markets.

Aceeca, of New Zealand, addresses high-margin enterprise and industrial markets. Aceeca's new handheld diagnostic measurement device, the Meazura™, has a proprietary expansion bus that allows developers to add custom diagnostic measurement modules. These mobile sensors will enable a range of potential mobile information solutions for agricultural, automotive, aircraft and medical industries, among others. Developers will have the opportunity to create innovative applications to measure things like calibration, conductivity, water currents, flow, force, torque, gas, humidity, light, medical, power, pressure, sound, vacuum, vibration and voltage applications.

Tapwave is a California-based company that will deliver a new category of Palm Powered mobile entertainment gear aimed at technology enthusiasts who want to manage their lifestyles and play, while on the go. Tapwave will provide developers with new ways to think about applications for gaming and multimedia entertainment on handheld devices.

New Wireless Email Partner
PalmSource and RIM also announced they will work together to market and promote the Blackberry Connect®, a push-based email and data services solution for Palm Powered handhelds and smartphones. As the enterprise becomes increasingly mobile, demand for easily deployable, wireless solutions that immediately increase productivity and reduce IT costs continue to grow. Mobile professionals and IT departments require reliable and secure access to corporate data from their wireless device and the ease of integration with existing back-end resources. BlackBerry Connect for Palm Powered devices will widen the choices of wireless messaging solutions for Palm OS licensees in order to better meet the needs of enterprise customers. Through RIM's BlackBerry Connect licensing program, Palm OS licensees will be offered RIM's software solution that enables behind-the-firewall, enterprise-ready BlackBerry® email and corporate data connectivity for Palm Powered handhelds and smartphones.
