Borland and PalmSource Advance Enterprise C++ Development for Palm OS® Mobile Applications
Borland® C++BuilderX™ and Application Lifecycle Management Solutions for C++ to Assist End-to-End Development for Palm Powered™ Mobile Devices
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. and MUNICH, Germany, September 22, 2003 - Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq NM: BORL) and PalmSource, Inc., provider of the popular operating system for handhelds and smartphones and the Palm OS® subsidiary of Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), today announced that Borland has licensed the PalmSource™ software development kits (SDKs) and will support Palm OS development in the Borland® C++BuilderX™ Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and latest Borland Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solutions for C++*. PalmSource Chief Products Officer Larry Slotnick will introduce and demonstrate this new solution for Palm OS application development during his presentation at the PalmSource Developer Conference in Munich, Germany.
"By supporting PalmSource SDKs with Borland C++BuilderX, we are helping to extend enterprise development for mobile applications," said J.P. LeBlanc, vice president and general manager mobile and C++ solutions at Borland. "More than 30 million Palm Powered devices have been sold to date, and our customers are looking for end-to-end C++ Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solutions that will allow them to create applications for the full range of handhelds and smartphones."
The combination of the PalmSource large user base and the flexible architecture of Palm OS has attracted a large community of third-party Palm OS developers. There are more than 275,000 registered developers building applications for Palm Powered mobile devices. The Palm OS developer community has created over 19,000 software applications in a broad range of categories including Web browsers, email and Internet communications, wireless messaging, sales force and field automation, personal productivity, groupware, financial management and games and entertainment. These solutions are designed to increase the value to the end user by offering increased customization of Palm Powered devices and help expand the market for licensee's products and services.
Borland C++BuilderX is a pure C++ development solution designed to provide true end-to-end development capabilities for the growing number of organizations extending their business infrastructures to include mobile applications and devices. In addition, C++BuilderX eases development of these mobile applications with the introduction of Rapid Application Development (RAD) capabilities for C++. This technology preview offers a new visual designer for drag and drop development and easier access to internally developed and third party mobile component libraries. By combining these capabilities with PalmSource SDKs, Palm OS developers are able to create innovative enterprise applications both for the enterprise and the individual in an increasingly mobile workforce.
"Our relationship with Borland aims to facilitate greater adoption of Palm Powered mobile devices in the enterprise," said Larry Slotnick, chief products officer, PalmSource. "Borland C++BuilderX is designed to accelerate the development of robust applications for Palm Powered devices and is well suited to ease integration into existing corporate and IT infrastructures."
