PalmSource Launches Palm Powered Mobile World
New Initiative Unites Mobile Operators, Infrastructure Providers and Software Developers to Boost Adoption of the Palm OS Platform in Consumer and Enterprise Markets
LAS VEGAS, Nev., Nov. 17, 2003, COMDEX Booth #10448 - PalmSource, Inc. (NASDAQ: PSRC) provider of Palm OS®, a leading operating system powering next generation mobile devices and smartphones announced today the launch of the Palm Powered Mobile World program. The Palm Powered Mobile World program connects mobile operators, infrastructure providers and software developers in a wireless ecosystem that capitalizes on the growing smartphone market.
The Palm Powered Mobile World program consists of two key elements. The first element of the Palm Powered Mobile World program is designed to make Palm OS the most service-ready platform for smart mobile devices by providing leading mobile operators the opportunity to collaborate with PalmSource to integrate their feedback and requirements into the Palm OS platform development efforts. The second element enables leading mobile operators to work closely with PalmSource to create a select catalog of software titles for over-the-air (OTA) delivery to Palm Powered™ smartphones. This Mobile World catalog will draw from over 20,000 Palm OS software titles tailored to the consumer and enterprise markets, giving mobile operators the opportunity to increase average revenue and average margin per user by selling Palm Powered smart mobile devices with a Mobile World catalog of software applications
Announced separately today, Sprint is the first charter mobile operator partner in the Palm Powered Mobile World program. PalmSource and Sprint will collaborate to provide the best wireless business solutions for Sprint's Palm Powered PCS Vision Smart Device customers. The agreement underlines Sprint's commitment to Palm OS, a leading platform in the mobile market and reinforces PalmSource's goal to become the platform leader in the smartphone market.
"Palm Powered Mobile World is a key strategic initiative designed to ignite the growth of the new wireless Palm economy," said David Nagel, president and chief executive officer of PalmSource, Inc. "We believe that this program creates a tremendous revenue-generating opportunity for mobile operators, infrastructure providers and software developers. Palm Powered Mobile World also makes it easier for customers to purchase wireless Palm OS applications over-the-air from their Palm Powered smartphone, changing the whole user experience of buying and installing applications on smart mobile devices."
According to Andrew Seybold, Founder, Outlook 4 Mobility, "The Palm Powered Mobile World program is a strong step forward for PalmSource by aligning and strengthening their relationship with mobile operators to drive growth in the smartphone market. Also, the program gives mobile operators a competitive advantage by leveraging PalmSource's enormous developer community that delivers applications in nearly every vertical market."
Palm Powered Mobile World provides the 275,000-strong Palm OS developer community technical support and marketing resources to build and promote wireless applications through the new PalmSource software store, announced separately today. Under this program, PalmSource will test software applications for ease of over-the-air download from the new software store to Palm Powered smart mobile devices. Palm Powered Mobile World offers Palm OS developers an additional revenue stream and increased exposure for their wireless applications to mobile operators worldwide.
Some of the most popular Palm OS applications are now available for OTA delivery on Palm Powered smartphones, including:
