Sunnyvale, Calif., Feb. 10, 2004 — At the PalmSource Developer Conference, Pen&Internet®, LLC today previewed the first cursive handwriting recognition system ever seen on a Palm Powered™ device, a significant milestone for note-taking and data entry for mobile professionals, students and consumers who use Palm Powered smart mobile devices.
This new feature, demonstrated as part of riteMail for Palm OS®, makes use of Pen&Internet's next-generation handwriting recognition technologies to provide instant unrestricted text input on Palm Powered devices. It allows users to write in their natural style on the entire screen of their Palm Powered handhelds.
In comparison to other systems available for Palm OS that recognize a limited number of single character shapes, Pen&Internet's handwriting recognition engine converts text into full words and sentences in cursive, printed or mixed handwriting styles. Combined with riteMail, users can take handwritten notes in high-quality electronic ink on their Palm Powered handhelds and transmit the notes to any email address, as well as fully edit and recognize them.
"The flexibility and ease-of-use of the Palm OS platform pave the way for new productivity solutions, including the new Pen&Internet solution, that extend the usability of Palm Powered smart mobile devices," said Larry Berkin, director of developer marketing, PalmSource, Inc. "We believe that it is a wonderful productivity tool for anyone who wants to take and exchange handwritten notes on their mobile device."
"We believe this new feature for Palm OS will open a whole new world of possibilities for note-taking and data entry for mobile users," said Leonid Kitainik, general manager of Pen&Internet. "For the first time, people have unrestricted handwriting recognition capabilities on their Palm Powered devices and the ability to easily combine drawings and text."
Pen&Internet's handwriting recognition technology and riteMail for Palm Powered devices are available for commercial licensing. Interested parties are invited to email: info@penandinternet.com about evaluation and commercial licensing terms.
The current version of riteMail is pre-loaded on a number of pen computing devices on the market, including: Clevo's T200V pen laptop, distributed by more than 10 OEMs; FingerSystem's i-pen Mouse, a pen-shaped optical mouse; and the dopod 696, currently running on the China Mobile wireless network.
